About Julie

I’m a media bias analyst, writer, speaker, and communications strategist interested in the stories we tell — and the way those stories shape what we believe.

For nearly a decade, I’ve studied how news organizations frame information, choose stories, craft language, and construct competing narratives around the exact same events. Through my work at AllSides, I’ve analyzed and rated thousands of media outlets for bias, trained media analysts, and helped develop tools that teach people to see through spin.

All of my work is built around a bigger question: How does the way information is crafted shape the way we see the world?

I explore that question from both sides of the communications equation: I analyze the narratives we encounter in the news and public life, and I help organizations to think strategically about the messages they craft and the audiences they’re trying to reach.

My commentary on media, politics, polarization, and culture has brought me onto programs including The Tim Pool Show and No Spin News with Bill O’Reilly. My work and analysis has been featured or cited by outlets including CNN, Fox Business, USA Today, the New York Post, and Columbia Journalism Review.

At the center of my work is the belief that when we learn to think critically about the information we consume, we can understand the world better — and truly think for ourselves.
